Frequently Asked Questions

We’re dedicated to helping you navigate the world of disability support with clarity and confidence. Two essential pillars of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) are Supported Independent Living (SIL) and Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA). While they may seem similar, there’s a world of difference between the two, and we’re here to shed light on their distinct roles.

Supported Independent Living (SIL):

🏠 Your Path to Independence: SIL is all about empowering you to embrace independence and thrive in your daily living activities.

🧡 Shared Living, Caring Support: Imagine a warm, welcoming shared living arrangement, where you’re part of a supportive community. Our dedicated staff is here to lend a helping hand, offering personal care, household assistance, and skill-building opportunities.

🌟 Growing Together: SIL focuses on nurturing your confidence and abilities, encouraging you to participate actively in your community and pursue your passions.

Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA):

🏠 Tailored to Your Needs: SDA takes housing to a whole new level, designed specifically for those with high support needs or extreme functional impairments.

💫 Beyond Ordinary Homes: Our SDA residences boast specialized features, cutting-edge design, and technology to enhance your quality of life and ensure your unique requirements are met.

🔑 Unlocking Housing Solutions: SDA funding covers the essential infrastructure and accommodations, providing a secure and comfortable space that supports your individuality.

At ECS, we understand that every journey is unique. That’s why we offer a comprehensive range of SIL and SDA services, designed to complement each other and pave the way for your independence and happiness. Let us be your partner on this transformative voyage toward a life of fulfillment and opportunity.

Discover the possibilities with SIL and SDA – together, they unlock the door to a future brimming with potential. Contact us today to embark on a journey of independence and inclusivity like never before!

If you require both SDA and SIL because of your disability, the NDIS will fund them separately. This gives you more choice and control over your support plan, as you can choose to live in a SDA home from one provider that you like and access another SIL provider that best suits your needs.

Supported Independent Living (SIL) and a group home are not the same, although they share some similarities.

SIL and a group home share the aspect of communal living, but they differ in their core objectives. SIL is centered around promoting independence and skill development, while a group home caters to individuals with higher support needs who require more intensive care and supervision.

At ECS, we offer both SIL services, recognizing that individuals have diverse needs and preferences. Our team is dedicated to providing tailored support, ensuring that each individual’s unique requirements are met, and fostering an environment that encourages personal growth, community integration, and overall well-being.

For more information on our SIL and group home services, please don’t hesitate to contact us . We are here to support you in making informed decisions and finding the most suitable living arrangement that aligns with your goals and aspirations.

The cost of Supported Independent Living (SIL) varies for each individual based on their specific needs, goals, and level of support required. The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides funding for SIL, and the amount of funding allocated is determined through an individualized planning process.

The NDIS considers several factors when determining the funding for SIL, including the complexity of the participant’s disability, the level of support needed, and the type of accommodation required. The funding provided is intended to cover the costs associated with the support workers, staff training, and any additional resources necessary to enable the participant to live as independently as possible.

As an NDIS registered service provider, ECS is committed to offering transparent and tailored support services. We work closely with participants and their families to ensure they receive the appropriate funding for their SIL needs.

For detailed information on the cost of Supported Independent Living and to discuss your individual requirements, please contact us  for a personalized consultation. We are here to assist you in navigating the NDIS process and providing the highest standard of care to support your journey towards independence and a fulfilling life.

SIL is funded under the Core Supports category of your NDIS plan. One of the first steps is to get a functional assessment report (usually from an occupational therapist) that shows the impact of your disability, why you are unable to access other types of housing, and what supports are required to help you achieve your housing goals. You also need to have a goal in your NDIS plan that relates to housing, to show that SIL is ‘reasonable and necessary’ to help you achieve your goal.

At ECS, we are dedicated to simplifying the process of applying for SIL funding and guiding you through each step. Our experienced team is here to support you in accessing the right support to foster your independence, empowerment, and overall well-being.

Looking for Supported Independent Living provider in Sydney? If you’re just starting out in your disability care journey, it can be hard to know where to look.

A good place to start is the Provider Finder tool on your NDIS portal. This online tool helps you find information about NDIS-registered providers in your area through a search based on your suburb and postcode. Other ways to learn more about SIL providers in your area are to ask other NDIS participants about their experiences, look at a provider’s reviews online, or chat with your support coordinator about SIL providers in your area.

Keep in mind that finding a SIL home you love can take time. There are some steps that need to fall into place, such as ensuring that the support worker-to-housemate ratio matches the level of support stated in your assessment and being able to meet the requirements in your occupational therapist’s assessment. Your support coordinator will work with you to help you find the right SIL provider for your needs.

We shall remove the term home caring as NDIS website doesn’t have any word like home caring.

Applying for SIL can be a complicated process, so it’s worth getting your support coordinator to help you (if you don’t have one, you can ask your Local Area Coordinator (LAC) about getting funding so you can engage one to assist you with finding the right housing solution for your needs). Your support coordinator can help you apply for housing funding that best meets your needs, and gather all the evidence and reports you need to apply for SIL funding.

If you have SIL included in your NDIS plan, you can access Home Caring’s Supported Independent Living programs in Sydney. To find out about Home Caring’s SIL services in your area, please get in touch. Our friendly team would love to help.
